| Product Description "One of the ways companies are looking for competitive advantage in this frenetic [business] environment . . . is through the use of a tactical technique called shared services. . . . In this book, we bridge [the] chasm between the theory of how a shared services operation 'ought to' work and the practical issues involved in how to make it work, how to carry out a successful implementation of a shared service operation in your business."-from the Preface. From the Back Cover Gaining competitive advantage in today's fierce business environment requires focus throughout the company on value, as measured by quality, cost, speed, and service. In the quest for superior performance, a growing number of companies are now turning to shared services, a tactical technique by which corporations can organize financial and other transaction-oriented activities to reduce costs and provide better service to business unit partners. Written by four authorities, three PricewaterhouseCoopers consultants and the executive who has directed the shared service efforts at Lucent Technologies, this comprehensive resource-the first of its kind-examines shared services from the macro issues that compel senior management to embrace this approach through the design and implementation of a shared services environment that leads to increased customer and shareholder value. Of all the tools available for gaining competitive advantage, why shared services? One of the principal reasons is that it creates, through consolidation of often disparate activities, more of a "one company" feel among business units. The benefits of this are twofold: one, it enables companies to show a consistent face to clients and customers, vendors and suppliers, shareholders and potential shareholders; two, it provides increased flexibility to all of the business' operations, allowing corporate leaders to maintain a global perspective while at the same time allowing business unit leaders to take strong, customer-focused actions. Providing both a domestic and global view, Shared Services addresses the full spectrum of issues, including: * Assessing whether shared services is right for you-issues to consider, goals to be reached. * Getting started-building support, establishing an effective organization, instituting continuous communication. * Setting up the infrastructure-billing shared services to business units, dealing with tax and legal entity issues. * International challenges-complexity, time zone, legal issues, currency stability, and security. * Program and project management-structures, planning, execution, and control. A groundbreaking book that examines a timely and important topic, Shared Services is an accessible and thorough guide to what could be a critical component in achieving long-term business success. This comprehensive resource is the first to introduce, explain, and explore shared services, an innovative business strategy that involves centralizing various business units, including accounting and transactional operations, to reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction. Presenting a practical and easy-to-follow blueprint for the smooth and sound implementation of shared services in your organization, Shared Services: Adding Value to the Business Units covers all the fundamentals, from how to get started to proper management techniques. Movie Money: Understanding Hollywood's (Creative) Accounting Practices --Free PDF Ebook Downloa
| From Booklist When columnist Art Buchwald sued Paramount for plagiarism and breach of contract over the 1988 film Coming to America, a by-product was the revelation that Hollywood's accounting practices are more than slightly deceptive. That movie grossed $350 million worldwide, but Paramount was able to claim that the movie failed to show a profit. Daniels and his coauthors shed light on the issue. One coauthor, David Leedy, was a CPA with an admitted grudge when he self-published a 1980 booklet Motion Picture Distribution--An Accountant's Perspective. He sold more than 5,000 copies out of a post office box in Hollywood. In 1990, he updated his guide, relying on revelations that came out of the Buchwald case, but a finished book never made it to market. This newest, more polished version is a result of a collaboration between Leedy and Daniels, an entertainment journalist, and Steven Sills, head of a Hollywood auditing firm. The authors target "entertainment professionals" as their intended audience, but Movie Money will fascinate anyone interested in show business. David Rouse Product Description Examining the numerous film industry definitions of "gross" and "net" profits, and the many ways in which these figures are calculated, this book attempts to unravel and explain the business' arcane "creative" accounting practices.

Quantitative Business Valuation: A Mathematical Approach for Today's --Free PDF Ebook Download
| Praise for the First Edition of Quantitative Business Valuation A Mathematical Approach for Today's Professionals "Jay Abrams' book is close to the equivalent of several graduate dissertations rolled into one book. For each topic (covered), he presents a scholarly summary of past research, new empirical research of his own, and his conclusions. It is a well-documented contribution to in-depth understanding of important business valuation issues, and should not be overlooked by the serious practitioner." "A must-read for the serious business appraiser." "The problem of simplified valuation procedures and coherent theory still remains complex and is ever evolving. Jay Abrams deals very effectively with this complexity through the use of mathematical formulas. Input to his models is explained with clarity and effectiveness, which adds to the overall value of this advanced text on business valuation." "Jay Abrams' book strives to provide mathematical modeling for what practitioners often do by reasoning alone. This book is a must-read for practitioners who are searching for additional techniques for dealing with some of business valuation's imponderables." "Jay Abrams' book will not only challenge the top theoreticians in the field; his step-by-step explanations will make advanced quantitative techniques available to the many appraisers who are not capable of independently creating the underlying mathematical analysis." "While a proliferation of business valuation treatises and guides exists in the market, most are very general in nature and do nothing more than rehash fundamental concepts. I am unaware of any author who has stepped into the unknown as Jay Abrams has and compiled and developed a treatise of extremely useful analytical tools for the serious valuator." "Jay Abrams develops unusual approaches which merit consideration when 'cookie cutter' methodologies are inadequate. This manuscript contributes to the dialogue among practitioners and strengthens the theoretical foundations of business valuation." "There is no question about it, the use of rigorous quantitative methods is the cure for subjective valuation analysis. This book not only satisfies this need—which has grown considerably in recent years—but is chock-full of new tools that have been carefully developed."

The Venture Capital Cycle --Free PDF Ebook Download
| Amazon.com Review In the last 25 years, the venture-capital industry has grown from a less than $1 billion to an over $60 billion business--growth that has far surpassed any other class of investment products. Today, the industry consists of several thousand professionals working at about 500 funds concentrated in California, Massachusetts, and a handful of other states. Despite the industry's size, there are many misconceptions about the nature and role of venture capitalists; their trade remains shrouded in mystery. Paul Gompers and Josh Lerner's Venture Capital Cycle is an illuminating academic examination of the form and function of venture-capital funds. Gompers and Lerner are Harvard Business School professors who have researched extensive original data to analyze venture-capital fundraising, investing, and exiting methods. Beginning with a historical overview of entrepreneurial finance, the book examines how venture partnerships are structured, how venture capitalists are compensated, the staging of investments in operating companies, and the relative performance of venture-capital-backed offerings. There's also an interesting comparison of corporate venture organizations, such as Xerox PARC, with those of independent and other venture groups. Venture capitalists use industry knowledge and monitoring skills to finance projects with significant uncertainty, typically concentrating investments in early-stage companies and high-tech industries. Large information gaps between entrepreneurs and investors create conflicted interests, and the book looks at some of the novel checks and balances most often employed. One of the book's themes is that the whole venture-capital process is best understood as a cycle: from the raising of a fund; to investing in, monitoring, and adding value to firms; then exiting deals; returning capital to investors; and finally renewing itself by raising additional funds. The need to exit an investment successfully shapes all aspects of the venture-capital cycle, from the ability to raise capital to the types of investments made. Another theme is that because venture funds must make long-term illiquid investments, they need to secure funds from their investors for periods of 10 years or more. The supply of venture capital consequently cannot adjust quickly to changes in the investment environment. The authors conclude that increasing familiarity with the venture-capital process has made the long-term prospects for venture investment more attractive than ever. Entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and investors will find this book a scholarly, well-documented examination of the industry. --Scott Harrison--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Review "Paul Gompers and Josh Lerner's book on venture capital will become the standard reference on venture finance, and, hopefully, a catalyst in a new wave of corporate law research...An academic achievement of the first order." —Michael Whincop, Companies & Securities Law Journal (Australia) "In The Venture Capital Cycle Paul Gompers and Josh Lerner bridge the gap between practice and theory, systematicaly describing and analyzing important issues influencing investment in entrepreneurial start-ups. By undertaking rich empirical analysis in the context of an analytically sound framework, the authors combine real-world sensibility and intellectual rigor, making this book essential reading for investors, venture capitalists, and students of finance." —David F. Swensen, Chief Investment Officer, Yale University
